"Family"
Open Call for Online exhibition and digital publication.
You are invited to explore the meaning of the term “Family” through your images and thoughts. A theme as broad as “Family” offers a variety of approaches. From personal experience and autobiography – which often has a diary feel – to documentary and conceptual photography, as a result of a reflection on what family means today.
As we understand it, the term “family” refers to a social unit consisting of people who live together and interact in a domestic environment and who are related to each other by kinship or emotional ties. Submitted photographs could explore, imply or provide answers to questions such as (but not limited to): “What are families today?”, “How do traditions and cultures affect the way we live, in and with them?”, “Are there new ways of understanding the family?”; also, references to immigrants who created new social groups as well as the demand made by same-sex couples for recognition of their right to start their own families.
Another starting point for approaching the theme “Family” may come from the history of art, and it is about a human behavior that is represented by the portrait as a pictorial genre: the desire to remember oneself by providing a historical record for one’s descendants. This behavior is replicated through photography, whether it be in a family album or the ancestral portraits on the wall.

Ανοιχτό κάλεσμα για την διαδικτυακή έκθεση και ηλεκτρονική έκδοση του Lightreadings.
Καλείστε να εξερευνήσετε και να δείξετε την έννοια του όρου «Οικογένεια» μέσα από τις εικόνες και τις σκέψεις σας. Ένα θέμα τόσο ευρύ όσο η «Οικογένεια» προσφέρει μια ποικιλία προσεγγίσεων. Από την προσωπική εμπειρία και αυτοβιογραφία – η οποία συχνά φέρει μια αίσθηση ημερολογίου – μέχρι τη φωτογραφία ντοκουμέντου και την εννοιολογική φωτογραφία, ως αποτέλεσμα ενός προβληματισμού για το τι σημαίνει οικογένεια σήμερα.
Όπως τον αντιλαμβανόμαστε, ο όρος «Οικογένεια» αναφέρεται σε μια κοινωνική μονάδα που αποτελείται από άτομα που συγκατοικούν και αλληλεπιδρούν σε ένα οικιακό περιβάλλον και τα οποία συνδέονται μεταξύ τους με συγγένεια ή συναισθηματικούς δεσμούς. Οι φωτογραφίες σας θα μπορούσαν να διερευνούν, να υπονοούν ή να απαντούν ερωτήσεις όπως (αλλά όχι μόνο): «Τι είναι οι οικογένειες σήμερα;», «Πώς οι παραδόσεις και οι πολιτισμοί επηρεάζουν τον τρόπο ζωής μας, σε αυτές και μαζί τους;», «Υπάρχουν νέοι τρόποι κατανόησης της οικογένειας;». Ακόμη, αναφορές σε μετανάστες που δημιούργησαν νέες κοινωνικές ομάδες καθώς και στο αίτημα των ομόφυλων ζευγαριών για αναγνώριση του δικαιώματός τους να ξεκινήσουν τη δική τους οικογένεια.
Μια άλλη αφετηρία για την προσέγγιση του θέματος «Οικογένεια» μπορεί να προέρχεται από την ιστορία της τέχνης και αφορά την ανθρώπινη συμπεριφορά που εκπροσωπείται και αναπαρίσταται από το πορτρέτο ως εικονογραφικό είδος: την επιθυμία να θυμάται κανείς τον εαυτό του παρέχοντας ταυτόχρονα είδος ιστορικού αρχείου στους απογόνους του. Αυτή η συμπεριφορά αναπαράγεται μέσω της φωτογραφίας, είτε σε ένα οικογενειακό άλμπουμ είτε στα προγονικά πορτρέτα στον τοίχο.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
"Family"
We welcome diverse submissions from all photographers worldwide of any age, both amateur and professional.
Send us your best photographs! We want to see exciting work that responds to the theme “Family”. Images can be shot in any format, using any camera, on film or digital.
Submission deadline: 15 July 2023
You will need to submit to lightreadingsmag@gmail.com the following:
- 5 – 7 images of your work (no signatures, watermarks or writing), attached to your email.
Please do not insert the images on the email body.
All images must be submitted as JPEGs (size 1500px on the longest side, 72dpi). The file name of your image must begin with the sequence number for the image followed by your full name. For example: 01_John Smith.jpeg. - Two to five lines of text to explain your approach. (Please, no artist statements.)
- Your Instagram and/or Facebook name so we can tag you.
The deadline to submit your entry is 15 July 2023 at 11.00 pm CEST. Participants names will be announced on 31 July 2023.
Please note that LIGHTREADINGS reserves the right to decline exhibiting work that do not meet the above requirements or does not match the theme.

Δεχόμαστε υποβολές για συμμετοχή σ’ αυτό το ανοιχτό κάλεσμα από όλους τους φωτογράφους παγκοσμίως, οποιασδήποτε ηλικίας, τόσο ερασιτέχνες όσο και επαγγελματίες.
Στείλτε μας τις καλύτερες φωτογραφίες σας! Θέλουμε να δούμε συναρπαστική δουλειά που ανταποκρίνεται στο θέμα «Οικογένεια». Οι φωτογραφίες μπορεί να έχουν ληφθεί χρησιμοποιώντας οποιαδήποτε κάμερα, αναλογική ή ψηφιακή, και σε οποιοδήποτε format.
Υποβολή Συμμετοχών Έως: 15 Ιουλίου 2023
Υποβάλετε στη διεύθυνση lightreadingsmag@gmail.com τα ακόλουθα:
- 5 – 7 φωτογραφίες σας (χωρίς υπογραφές, υδατογραφήματα ή κείμενο), ως συνημμένα στο email σας.
Μην εισάγετε τις εικόνες στο σώμα του email.
Όλες οι εικόνες πρέπει να υποβάλλονται ως JPEG (μέγεθος 1500 px στη μεγαλύτερη πλευρά, 72 dpi). Το όνομα αρχείου της εικόνας σας πρέπει να ξεκινά με τον αύξοντα αριθμό της εικόνας ακολουθούμενο από το πλήρες όνομά σας. Για παράδειγμα: 01_Giannis Papadopoulos.jpeg - Τρείς ως πέντε γραμμές κειμένου όπου θα εξηγείτε την προσέγγισή σας. (παρακαλούμε, όχι μακροσκελή κείμενα!)
- Το όνομά σας στο Instagram για να μπορούμε να σας επισημάνουμε (tag).
Η προθεσμία υποβολής συμμετοχών είναι η 15η Ιουλίου 2023 στις 11.00 μ.μ. CEST (12.00 μ.μ. ώρα Ελλάδας). Τα ονόματα των συμμετεχόντων θα ανακοινωθούν στις 31 Ιουλίου 2023.
Λάβετε υπόψη ότι το LIGHTREADINGS διατηρεί το δικαίωμα να αρνηθεί την έκθεση έργων που δεν πληρούν τις παραπάνω προϋποθέσεις ή έργα που, κατά την κρίση του επιμελητή, δεν ταιριάζουν με το θέμα.

Panos is a freelance photographer of 36 years. He works worldwide on personal artistic projects resulting in books and exhibitions, as well as on assignments for magazines, institutions and independents. He also organizes and teaches photography workshops for photographers and advanced amateurs throughout Greece and Europe.
Chiarra Brambila
documentarian / film maker
Chiarra is an independent documentarian and film maker. She studied anthropology and cinema in Rome and Venice. Her documentary films are focused on “human condition” and man’s interaction with nature and tradition.
