The Thessaloniki Photobiennale is on its way, from October 10, 2023 until February 11, 2024, with more than 100 photographers from 18 countries participating and presenting their work in a multi-thematic programme of 25 exhibitions, open public events and educational programmes hosted in 19 museums, cultural venues and art venues in Thessaloniki and Athens.

The Thessaloniki Photobiennale 2023, organised by the MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography and supported by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, completes its thirty-sixth anniversary and is one of the oldest photography festivals in Europe. The main exhibition of the Thessaloniki Photobiennale 2023, “The Spectre of the People”, explores populism through photography and video and will be presented in MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography and MOMus-Experimental Center for the Arts, in Warehouse A’, Pier A’, Thessaloniki Port, from October 20, 2023, until February 11, 2024, curated by the art historian and photography theorist, Julian Stalabrass.

As the spectre of populism stalks the Earth, artists have grappled with its myriad dimensions: how and if to represent ‘the people’ (should they be thought to exist), and to represent democratic power, the nature of charismatic leaders, and popular protest and insurgency. The media of the lens, woven tightly around the history of mass politics since its inception, have been a natural field for this artistic exploration, which is variously documentary, performative, satirical and conceptual. 

In the presented works by 26 photographers and groups, we explore questions like: who are ‘the people’, can they be grasped visually, are they the source of hope or dread, how are they condensed in the figures of their would-be leaders, and how do they assemble and behave in political protest? Who stands -- or is put -- outside ‘the people’, in terms of rights, living conditions and representation? And how are the visual aspects of political performance employed in the political fallout, to right, left and otherwise, from the crisis of the neoliberal centre?

Like the phenomenon of populism, born out of profound political crisis, the exhibition has a global ambit, contrasting works from artists working in nations including Brazil, Greece, Hungary, India, Italy, the Philippines, Poland, Ukraine, the UK and the US. This only makes the elusive concept of populism as it spans both the left-right divide, and that between mass participation and authoritarian rule, harder to tie down.

The programme of the Thessaloniki Photobiennale 2023 (to be announced), includes exhibitions of archival interest, historical and contemporary, group and individual, first-time and established photographers, the recording of the domestic photobook in the last twenty years, along with parallel events, educational programmes and guided tours.

All MOMus museums participate in the Thessaloni Photobiennale 2023 for the first time since the launch of the organisation on 2018, and is warmly supported by cultural bodies and organisations of Thessaloniki and Greece. Now living in an environment with the consequences of the health crisis that the pandemic left in the last three years present everywhere, now faced with other types of crises, such as the climate or even wars, photography is the medium that captures the not so optimistic reality, at the same time creating occasions for lively and active thinking about hope for the future that already here.

Το φετινό ραντεβού με την τέχνη της φωτογραφίας δίνεται στη Thessaloniki PhotoΒiennale 2023, από τις 10 Οκτωβρίου 2023 έως τις 11 Φεβρουαρίου 2024! 100 και πλέον φωτογράφοι από 18 χώρες συμμετέχουν και παρουσιάζουν τη δουλειά τους σε ένα πολυθεματικό πρόγραμμα 25 εκθέσεων, εκδηλώσεων λόγου, ανοιχτών δράσεων στο κοινό και εκπαιδευτικών προγραμμάτων, που θα φιλοξενηθούν σε 19 μουσεία, χώρους πολιτισμού και αίθουσες τέχνης στη Θεσσαλονίκη και την Αθήνα για τέσσερις μήνες!

Η Thessaloniki PhotoΒiennale, διοργάνωση που επιμελείται το Μουσείο Φωτογραφίας Θεσσαλονίκης του MOMus, υποστηρίζεται από το Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού, συμπληρώνει φέτος τριάντα έξι χρόνια παρουσίας και είναι ένα από τα παλαιότερα φωτογραφικά φεστιβάλ της Ευρώπης. Ταυτόχρονα αποτελεί σημαντικό βήμα παρουσίασης της σύγχρονης και ιστορικής ελληνικής φωτογραφικής δημιουργίας και ένα ζωτικό σταυροδρόμι ζύμωσής της με την αντίστοιχη διεθνή σκηνή.

H κεντρική έκθεση της φετινής διοργάνωσης με τίτλο «Το φάντασμα του λαού» διερευνά τις πολλές διαφορετικές πτυχές του λαϊκισμού μέσα από τη φωτογραφία και το βίντεο και θα παρουσιαστεί στο MOMus-Μουσείο Φωτογραφίας Θεσσαλονίκης και στο MOMus-Πειραματικό Κέντρο Τεχνών, στην Προβλήτα Α’ στο λιμάνι της πόλης από τις 20 Οκτωβρίου 2023 έως τις 11 Φεβρουαρίου 2024, σε επιμέλεια του ιστορικού της τέχνης και θεωρητικού της φωτογραφίας Julian Stallabrass.

Καθώς το φάντασμα του λαϊκισμού στοιχειώνει τον πλανήτη, πολλοί καλλιτέχνες έχουν εξερευνήσει τις πολυάριθμες διαστάσεις του φαινομένου: πώς και εάν θα πρέπει να αναπαρίστανται ο «λαός» (εάν θεωρήσουμε ότι υφίσταται ως έννοια), η δημοκρατική εξουσία, η φύση των χαρισματικών ηγετών, η λαϊκή διαμαρτυρία και εξέγερση. Ο φακός, ως μέσο που από τη γέννησή του υπήρξε στενά συνυφασμένο με την ιστορία της μαζικής πολιτικής, εύλογα βρέθηκε στο επίκεντρο αυτής της καλλιτεχνικής διερεύνησης, που έχει πάρει πολλές διαφορετικές μορφές - τεκμηριωτική, επιτελεστική, σατιρική, εννοιολογική.

Στα έργα 26 φωτογράφων και συλλογικοτήτων αποτυπώνονται ερωτήματα όπως ποιος είναι «ο λαός», πώς μπορεί να αποτυπωθεί οπτικά, κατά πόσον είναι πηγή ελπίδας ή τρόμου, πώς ενσαρκώνεται στις μορφές των επίδοξων ηγετών του και πώς συγκροτείται και συμπεριφέρεται στην πολιτική διαμαρτυρία; Ποιος βρίσκεται εκτός ή αποκλείεται από την κατηγορία του «λαού» ως προς τα δικαιώματα, τις συνθήκες διαβίωσης και την εκπροσώπηση; Και πώς αξιοποιούνται οι οπτικές πτυχές της πολιτικής επιτέλεσης στο πλαίσιο των επιπτώσεων που έχει η κρίση του νεοφιλελεύθερου κέντρου για τη δεξιά, την αριστερά και όχι μόνο;

Όπως και το ίδιο το φαινόμενο του λαϊκισμού -γέννημα βαθιάς πολιτικής κρίσης- και η ίδια η έκθεση έχει διεθνή χαρακτήρα, παρουσιάζοντας έργα καλλιτεχνών από χώρες όπως η Βραζιλία, η Ελλάδα, η Ουγγαρία, η Ινδία, η Ιταλία, οι Φιλιππίνες, η Πολωνία, η Ουκρανία, το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο και οι ΗΠΑ. Το γεγονός αυτό καθιστά ακόμα πιο δύσκολο το έργο του προσδιορισμού της ασαφούς έννοιας του λαϊκισμού, η οποία υπερβαίνει τόσο την παραδοσιακή διάκριση μεταξύ αριστεράς-δεξιάς όσο και αυτή μεταξύ μαζικής συμμετοχής και αυταρχικής εξουσίας.

Στο πρόγραμμα της Thessaloniki PhotoΒiennale 2023 που θα ανακοινωθεί, παρουσιάζονται επίσης εκθέσεις αρχειακού ενδιαφέροντος, ιστορικές και σύγχρονες, ομαδικές και ατομικές, πρωτοεμφανιζόμενων και καταξιωμένων φωτογράφων, η αποτύπωση του εγχώριου photobook τα τελευταία είκοσι χρόνια,  ταυτόχρονα με παράλληλες εκδηλώσεις, εκπαιδευτικά προγράμματα και ξεναγήσεις.

Στη Thessaloniki PhotoBiennale 2023 συμμετέχουν όλες οι διευθύνσεις του MOMus για πρώτη φορά από την ίδρυσή του το 2018 και υποστηρίζεται θερμά από πολιτιστικούς φορείς και οργανισμούς της πόλης και της χώρας. Ζώντας πλέον σε ένα περιβάλλον με τις συνέπειες της υγειονομικής κρίσης που άφησε η πανδημία τα τελευταία τρία χρόνια παντού παρούσες, αντιμέτωποι πλέον και με άλλους τύπου κρίσεις, όπως η κλιματική ή και πολέμους, η φωτογραφία είναι το μέσο που αποτυπώνει την όχι τόσο αισιόδοξη πραγματικότητα, δημιουργώντας συγχρόνως αφορμές για ζωηρή και ενεργή σκέψη για ελπίδα για το μέλλον που είναι ήδη εδώ.
